Do Skonu: Womb of primeval darkness

For some reason we got a bunch of old stuff to review but you know what they say? A wine gets better and better by time, so this must be true with music also.
Do Skonu, or До Скону as they actually are spelling their band name, is a black metal band from Ukraine praising the lord Satan and his stake. “Womb of primeval darkness” was released in 2011 and first only on tape, so that it was even harder for people to listen to. However a CD version was later released for all of us to grab, hurray!
Well, Eastern European bands can be really great, this we know, but there is no limit in how much they can suck either (I guess this really isn’t true only for Eastern Europe, but hey I must write about something…). This album is not one of the really horrible ones. Yeah I know what you’re thinking! Horrible as in good or bad? It is still black metal we are talking about, right, but I meant horrible as in bad. This is actually pretty good and well executed in almost every way.
One doesn’t need to be a black metal elitist of sacred altars to hear the similarities with (or worship of) almighty Watain, mostly in terms of the guitars, take this track for instance. But one can also hear references from older Norwegian bands, somehow “Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” comes to mind. Everything sound pretty great so far, right? But then there is something that makes this album to be less great as previously mentioned inspiration sources/similar music and that is the memorability of the tracks and the band’s own originality. However we still are offered a good album. Something we aren’t that spoiled with here at GD.
